The Age of Invisible Machines

Robb Wilson - 09/22
Wiley
In Age of Invisible Machines, Robb Wilson explores the revolutionary impact of conversational AI and hyperautomation on businesses and society. The book outlines how companies can create intelligent, autonomous systems—referred to as “digital workers”—to streamline operations, enhance customer interactions, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving digital economy. Wilson shares a blueprint for integrating cutting-edge technologies like conversational interfaces, generative AI, and machine learning into business ecosystems. He argues that these “invisible machines” represent a paradigm shift in automation, enabling organizations to move beyond simple task-based automation to complex, human-like interactions and decision-making processes. At its core, the book provides both a vision of the future shaped by AI and practical strategies for navigating this transformation, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and a long-term framework for implementation. It begins brilliantly with valuable insights, but at times, it feels repetitive—almost like a promotional tool for his own CSG2.

From Idea to Product/Market Fit

Omar Mohout - 04/17
Die Keure
A comprehensive guide designed to assist entrepreneurs in transforming their ideas into successful startups, this book emphasizes the importance of taking action, embracing failure as a learning opportunity, and understanding that being smart is about knowing how to find answers rather than having them all. It aims to help readers ask the right questions and develop potential solutions. Throughout the book, Mohout provides guidance, insights, perspectives, and inspiration to navigate each stage effectively, aiming to equip entrepreneurs with the tools needed to progress from an initial idea to achieving product/market fit. With its short text sections and light illustrations, the book offers an easy, enjoyable read. The design is also well-executed.

The Power of Moments

Chip Heath & Dan Heath - 03/17
Corgi Books
if you interact with people and need to improve they way the interaction is set up, than this book should be for you. It refers to deep, connecting moments of pride we all experience in our lives (think graduation time, weddings or holiday) and how to apply them to customer experiences in our daily lives. The authors identify four key elements that create powerful moments, from elevation to connectionThe book offers engaging stories and practical guidance, but like many American reads, it can feel overly optimistic—overlooking the everyday challenges of product design that must be overcome before you can create truly memorable experiences. But if you focus on the fact that this is the outcome you strategize for, it is a refreshing read.

The Design of Everyday Things

Donald Norman - 11/13
INGP
The Design of Everyday Things is a seminal book on design and usability that explores how thoughtful design can make objects and systems intuitive and user-friendly. Norman delves into the psychology of human interaction with everyday objects, emphasizing how good design aligns with human needs and expectations. The book introduces key principles like affordances (clues about how an object should be used), signifiers (cues that guide users), constraints (features that limit incorrect use), and feedback (responses that inform users their actions were successful). Through engaging examples, Norman highlights the pitfalls of poorly designed objects—like confusing doors or overly complex appliances—and advocates for human-centered design that prioritizes clarity, functionality, and accessibility. By blending cognitive psychology with practical design insights, The Design of Everyday Things remains a cornerstone text for designers, engineers, and anyone interested in creating intuitive and effective user experiences.

Escaping The Build Trap

Melissa Perri - 11/18
O'Reilly
Escaping the Build Trap offers a compelling framework for transforming organizations from feature factories into customer-focused, product-led companies. It serves as both a diagnostic tool and a practical guide for product leaders trying to break free from the cycle of building features without purpose. Even with years of experience in product design and management, Perri’s insights were eye-opening: product teams often drift toward delivering “nice-to-have” features (outputs) that fail to generate meaningful outcomes for users. We know this in theory, yet repeatedly forget it in practice—a testament to how ingrained output-focused thinking has become. The book’s core message is: success is too often measured by features shipped, not problems solved. This shift from outcomes to outputs happens gradually, turning teams into what Perri calls “feature factories.” Even seasoned practitioners can fall into the trap, celebrating velocity while losing sight of actual user value.
While some of the implementation guidance feels abstract—especially for teams without direct user contact—this doesn’t diminish the book’s value. Not all teams have robust user research processes, and Perri’s recommendations work best where feedback loops are established. Even so, the book helped me refocus on solving real user problems rather than chasing feature delivery. Its reminder that user-centered outcomes matter more than impressive feature sets is simple yet profound, and surprisingly easy to forget amid sprint deadlines and stakeholder pressure. This is an essential read for anyone in product management, whether new or experienced. It offers both a way to diagnose when you’ve fallen into the build trap and a roadmap for climbing out. In an industry obsessed with shipping, Escaping the Build Trap is a timely reminder that true success is measured by the problems we solve—not the features we create.

Innovation By Design

Thomas Lockwood / Edgar Papke - 11/17
Career Press
This book explores why some organizations are more innovative than others and how companies can harness design thinking to drive meaningful change and creativity in their teams. Lockwood presents actionable strategies and case studies from leading companies, showing how leaders can cultivate cultures of innovation through ten core attributes and collective imagination. The book mixes academic insight with practical advice, plus a dash of optimism, making the case that a design-centric approach is the magic sauce for thriving in today’s ever-evolving business jungle

Product-Led Growth

Wes Bush - 05/19
Product Led Insitute
If you’re building or designing for a SaaS company, this book is a goldmine of practical advice on shifting from a sales-led to a product-led approach. You might assume you already know most of the tips the author covers, but time and again it proves eye-opening, even for seasoned designers like me. Written in an engaging, lively style with a touch of humour, it anchors its insights in real-world examples. For instance, the author shows how letting users experience value firsthand (think Slack’s freemium model) can transform a product into a growth engine, and why companies should adopt free trials or freemium offerings to demonstrate value before asking for commitment. Throughout, the book offers actionable strategies, clear frameworks, and backs its claims with solid data. It's an American-style read (flamboyant and somewhat over-the-top writing style), but I read it in two days (agreed, it's not very long either)

The Lean Startup

Eris Ries - 11/13
Pearson
The Lean Startup by Eric Ries is a classic guide to building successful businesses and products through continuous innovation, validated learning, and efficient use of resources. Instead of relying on rigid business plans and assumptions, Ries proposes an adaptive, scientific approach that helps entrepreneurs create products people actually want — faster and with less waste. At the heart of the method is the Build–Measure–Learn feedback loop. Ries emphasizes validated learning over traditional success metrics like vanity statistics (downloads, signups, etc.). Success is measured by how effectively a startup learns what customers truly value. There’s a reason this book is considered a classic: it tackles real product and business challenges that many companies still face today — challenges I come across in almost every project too. Ries offers sharp, practical insights on how to address them. I’ll admit, I put off reading it for a long time, assuming it would be a dry, theoretical book about Scrum and Agile. But it’s actually the opposite — an accessible, engaging read filled with lessons drawn from Ries’s own experiences and other real-world examples. If you work in product management, this one’s a must-read.

Design for How People Think

John Whalen - 04/19
O'Reilly
In Design for How People Think, cognitive scientist John Whalen bridges neuroscience and user experience design to help product teams create digital experiences that align with how the human brain naturally processes information. Instead of relying on surface-level user feedback or intuition, Whalen introduces a practical framework called the Six Minds of Experience, which represents six cognitive systems—vision, memory, language, decision-making, emotion, and action—that together shape how users perceive and interact with products. Drawing from real-world examples and brain science, Whalen shows how understanding these mental systems can help designers, product managers, and researchers uncover the deeper, often subconscious motivations behind user behavior. The book emphasizes empathy-driven design grounded in psychology rather than guesswork, offering actionable tools for conducting research, mapping cognitive journeys, and translating insights into effective design decisions. Ultimately, Design for How People Think is a guide to designing more intuitive, engaging, and human-centered digital products—by aligning design strategy with the way people actually think, feel, and decide.

Sprint

Jake Knapp - 03/16
Transworld Publishers
In Sprint, Google Ventures designer Jake Knapp shares a practical, step-by-step framework for tackling tough business challenges and testing new ideas in just five days. Developed and refined at Google and later across dozens of startups, the Design Sprint is a structured process that compresses months of work—brainstorming, prototyping, and user testing—into a single focused week.
Each day has a clear purpose: Monday defines the problem and sets a goal; Tuesday sketches competing solutions; Wednesday decides on the best one; Thursday builds a realistic prototype; and Friday tests it with real users.
Backed by real-world case studies from companies like Slack, Nest, and Blue Bottle Coffee, Sprint offers teams a repeatable playbook for innovation—one that combines design thinking, lean startup methods, and agile testing into a powerful, time-bound format. The result is an easy-reading book full of insights that help you focus on lean product development.

Monetizing Innovation

Madhavan Ramanujam & Georg Tacke - 05/16
Wiley
A really insightful book on pricing in SaaS, “Monetizing Innovation” by Madhavan Ramanujam and Georg Tacke is a guide on how companies can effectively monetize their innovations by designing products around the price customers are willing to pay, rather than developing products first and then setting prices. The authors argue that successful innovation requires understanding customer willingness to pay from the outset to avoid common pitfalls of overpricing or underpricing, which often results in product failure.

The book introduces the concept of price-led innovation, where pricing strategy shapes product features and development processes. It emphasizes the need for customer interviews, prototype testing, and competitive analysis to align product offerings with market demands and value perception. This approach reduces risks, enhances profitability, and improves market acceptance.
Key lessons include starting with price, value-based pricing focusing on customer value rather than cost, using an iterative approach to pricing strategy, and involving cross-functional teams throughout product development. The authors support their frameworks with real-world examples from various industries, illustrating how pricing integrated into product design can lead to financial success.
Overall, the book provides actionable insights and practical tools for startups and established companies aiming to increase the success rate of their innovations by embedding monetization considerations early in the product development lifecycle

Building AI-Powered Products

Dr. Marily Nika - 02/25
O'Reilly
Known for being authoritative and practical resources in the fields of technology and programming, O'Reilly books are always a sure bet. “Building AI-Powered Products” by Dr. Marily Nika is a great guide for product managers who want to develop AI and generative AI (GenAI) products effectively. Drawing on her experience at Google and Meta, Nika provides a practical playbook that breaks down the complexities of AI product development into actionable strategies, tools, and real-world examples.

The book introduces the AI Product Development Lifecycle (AIPDL), a structured process covering ideation, opportunity discovery, concept/prototype creation, testing and analysis, and rollout. It distinguishes between building new AI-native products (“0-to-1”) and integrating AI into existing products (“1-to-n”). Nika emphasizes the importance of aligning AI innovations with real user pain points, business goals, and technical feasibility rather than pursuing AI as a novelty.

Key themes include the evolving role of AI product managers who blend business, technology, and user experience, the strategic decision-making between building an in-house AI solution or buying one, and defining success metrics that blend product health, system health, and AI proxy metrics. She also addresses ethical considerations, data governance, model interpretability, and user trust—all essential for responsible AI innovation. The book closes with insights on AI agents and autonomous AI systems, highlighting their implications for future digital experiences. Overall, it is a critical resource for anyone involved in or aspiring to lead AI product initiatives, emphasizing that mastering AI product management is vital as AI becomes foundational in technology innovation. On a more personal note, I did find it a bit too dry to read, but it still is a very insightful book.

Winning at SaaS

Steve Tafaro - 06/24
Privately Published
At first glance, this book feels like a sales brochure, full of praise for the Tafaro Growth Accelerator. Yet, it does offer useful insights.
This slim guide helps SaaS leaders build efficient, sustainable, and profitable sales operations early in their business lifecycle. It outlines best practices to align sales and executive teams, navigate the five key phases of the SaaS sales process, and craft marketing messages rooted in customer empathy and pain points. The playbook encourages innovative approaches to pricing, sales models, and customer engagement, challenging traditional methods to boost efficiency and revenue.

Key takeaways include competing effectively against larger rivals by exploiting their weaknesses, designing transparent pricing aligned with value, implementing low-touch sales processes, and building competitive moats through integrations, network effects, and high switching costs.
Overall, it serves as a tactical manual for SaaS CEOs and CROs, offering strategies to build a focused sales engine, align leadership, and drive early market success.

Continuous Discovery Habits

Teresa Torrs - 05/21
Product Talk LLC
“Continuous Discovery Habits” by Teresa Torres is a book that advocates for making product discovery a sustainable, ongoing practice rather than a one-time event. The core idea is that teams should continuously engage with customers through regular, small research activities to understand their needs, test assumptions, and refine product ideas. This method helps create products that genuinely deliver customer value and align with business goals.

The book outlines a structured approach centered around habits that emphasize outcome-focused work (desired customer and business impacts rather than just outputs like features), collaborative cross-functional teamwork, visual mapping of customer journeys, and systematic experimentation to validate assumptions. Key practices include continuous interviewing, mapping opportunity spaces, prioritizing opportunities over solutions, and testing assumptions rather than just ideas to avoid bias.

Torres stresses the importance of developing a discovery mindset that is customer-centric, experimental, visual, and iterative, enabling teams to reduce risks, make better decisions, and build products that meet real needs. The book is enriched with practical tools, real-world examples, and psychological insights aimed at helping teams embed continuous discovery within their workflows for sustained innovation and impact

Inspired

Marty Cagan - 01/18
Wiley
This book is a guide for product managers and teams focused on building impactful, customer-centric technology products. The book emphasizes the importance of deeply understanding customer needs and problems, empowering cross-functional teams with autonomy, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and experimentation to drive innovation. Cagan advocates for thorough product discovery before development, using prototyping and testing to validate ideas and avoid waste. He highlights the crucial role of a clear product vision, mission-driven teams, and effective collaboration across product managers, designers, and engineers. The book also discusses overcoming organizational challenges like shifting priorities and consensus cultures, emphasizing that successful product outcomes stem from the whole team’s efforts aligned with customer and business goals. Overall, “Inspired” provides actionable frameworks and best practices for creating technology products that users love and that drive sustainable business success. Marty Cagan’s writing style is clear, practical, and focused on delivering actionable insights, especially for product managers and teams.

The Power of Habit

Charles Duhigg - 02/13
Penguin Books
The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg explores the science behind why habits exist and how they can be changed to improve our lives, organizations, and societies. The core concept revolves around the habit loop consisting of three parts: the cue (trigger), the routine (behavior), and the reward (benefit). Habits form because the brain seeks to conserve energy by automating repeated behaviors through this loop. Duhigg explains that habits are powerful but malleable. The “Golden Rule of Habit Change” is to keep the same cue and reward but replace the routine with a new behavior. This insight enables people and organizations to transform themselves by identifying and shifting keystone habits that trigger widespread positive changes. The book combines neuroscience, psychology, and real-life examples—from individuals overcoming addictions to companies like Alcoa and social movements driven by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr.—to show how habits shape outcomes. It also explores willpower as a habit that can be developed and used to sustain change. Ultimately, by understanding habits and consciously shaping them, people gain the power and responsibility to control their behaviors, improve productivity, health, and achieve lasting success
